Remembering the 2011 U.S. Amateur
The 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship at Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club marked the first time the world’s premier amateur competition was held in Wisconsin, and it did not disappoint. The field was unusually strong, as evidenced by their play before, during and after the championship. Kelly Kraft defeated Patrick Cantlay in the memorable 36-hole final to earn the Havemeyer Trophy. In claiming the title, Kraft beat out a number of future PGA Tour winners, including Harris English, Russell Henley, Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth (who reached the quarter-final round).
There will be a number of contestants from the 2011 U.S. Amateur in the field of the 2017 U.S. Open Championship. How much will their 2011 experience help them in 2017? Will one of them even be the defending champion (after winning at Oakmont Country Club next month)? It will be fun to see how the Class of 2011 fares six years later.
